Exigent Mission Critical and ACI responded to a data center cooling failure with immediate coil replacement work and around-the-clock support, helping restore stable operating conditions.

Restoring Stable Data Center Operations: Emergency Cooling Repairs Under Critical Conditions

A Northern Virginia data center experienced a cooling failure when contaminated water restricted flow through its cooling coils, reducing their ability to transfer heat. Temperatures inside the data hall rose to levels that forced servers to shut down.

Exigent Mission Critical and ACI were already on-site for a planned, phased replacement of a small number of cooling coils. Within one to two hours, the situation escalated into an emergency requiring additional manpower, an expanded replacement scope, and continuous work under extreme heat.

The facility needed a team that could begin work immediately and sustain the recovery effort while managing demanding working conditions.

Exigent Mission Critical and ACI redirected the on-site crew to the emergency work and called in additional skilled union employees to replace affected fan-wall coils inside the data hall.

The scope expanded from a limited replacement project to nearly all affected coils in the data hall. Continuing water-quality issues required some coils to be replaced more than once, extending the replacement work.

Dozens of employees supported the response, completing approximately 1,000 labor hours during the first weekend alone. After the initial emergency, the team established a structured 24-hour operation, with crews working rotating 12-hour shifts for approximately six weeks.

Experienced ACI leaders organized the work and monitored employee safety. Hydration, rest breaks, and attention to individual limits helped crews manage the extreme heat while maintaining safe, accurate work.

The team’s rapid mobilization and sustained coil replacement work helped the facility restore stable operating conditions. Exigent continued supporting the customer after the immediate emergency was resolved.

Several contractors initially participated in the response. As work continued, the customer selected Exigent Mission Critical and ACI to remain on the project. The team’s technical skills, available manpower, and organized execution strengthened the existing customer relationship and expanded Exigent’s role at the facility.
